Creation of an innovative framework for the sustainable management of sub-mountainous and mountainous grazing and pasture lands at protected areas – ecoPASTURE

Specific problem of the area to be addressed

Extensive livestock farming is a tool for the conservation of grassland and open bush ecosystems and for the prevention of closed bush/forest areas alteration. It’s an internationally accepted/applied practice and management option at the NATURA 2000 protected areas. Also, extensive livestock farming is an invigoration catalyst for local economy. The scope is to create an innovative system for the sustainable management of sub-mountainous and mountainous grazing/pasture lands at protected areas.

Main project activities planned

The project aims in fulfilling its scope through 3 main groups of actions: a) assessment/classification of pasture types at NATURA 2000 areas, b) development of a set of appropriate indicators for the monitoring of the conservation status of pasture types, and c) development of a DB/innovative ICT tool for the standardized production of Pasturing Management Plans.

Expected outputs and results

The result is the improvement of institutional capacity to prepare/monitor Pasturing Management Plans (PMP). Main outcomes are: mapping methodology/assessment/classification of Management Units (MU) of grassland/non-grassland ecosystems as pasture lands at the CB area; MU identification/authentication key; methodology for producing a set of monitoring indicators of the conservation status; specifications/content of PMP; DB/innovative ICT tool/White Book for the standardized production of PMP.
